Sailboat Patent Prints

On April 19, 1921 Fredrik Ljungstrom presented a new invention for sailboat-rigging.
He wanted to provide a rigging with a reduced number of sails that connected the mast with the hull so that it could be brought in different positions (backward, forward, longitudinal directions).

Lewis Herreshoff patented his version of the sailboat on January 11, 1927.
He made improvements to the hull, mast and the main sail in hopes of creating a better sailboat to be used in races. Figures 2 and 3 show the position of the sails and mast in tacking.

Albert Schlumpf invented his version of the sailboat on December 13, 1938.
He created a sailboat that was completely collapsible. It could be taken apart and simply transported in the form of hand luggage. In spite of its low weight it was still entirely seaworthy and very rapid.

This version of the steering wheel was invented on January 11, 1944 by Andrew Higgins.
He realized that it often takes several turns of the wheel to bring the rudder from an extreme port position to the equivalent starboard position. Since small naval craft are usually not armored the rapidity with which the course is changed can mean the difference between destruction and safety. This steering wheel would be used on a small motor craft and preferably for military use.
